We don't know about a "primitive" or preliterate culture that had no type of standardized correspondence amongst spirits and the living.
This marvel is by all accounts all inclusive in the old (particularly "ancient") world, and just starts to go under genuine attack with the ascent of monotheism around 1000 BCE- - and, after its all said and done just as the "fake" or "risky" movement of different gatherings, not of one's own.
In the event that you are a monotheist, when your own particular god converses with you it is divine motivation; when out-groupers hear the voices of different divine beings or spirits it is magic (the old term for soul directing or psychic mediumship) or devilish ownership - or a fabrication, on the grounds that clearly (and it turns out to be progressively "self-evident" around the start of the Common Era) those divine beings and spirits don't exist. Just your own particular god does.
